DIY Mushroom Cultivation: Growing Mushrooms in a Milk Jug with Coffee Grounds

In this blog post, I'm going to show you how to grow mushrooms in a milk jug using coffee grounds from a local coffee shop. This is an easy and economical way to grow mushrooms at home, and the results are absolutely delicious. So, without taking any more of your time, let's get started!

To begin with, you'll need a few things: a milk jug, coffee grounds, a funnel, hot water, a nail, a screwdriver, and mushroom mycelium spawn. You can easily get the coffee grounds from your local coffee shop for free, and if you want to be really economical, you can also use Aspen wood chips instead of coffee grounds. However, Aspen wood chips are a bit expensive, so coffee grounds are a great way to go.

The first thing you need to do is sterilize everything. This is really important because if there are spores of other fungus or mold present in your growing medium or tools, the entire growth of mushrooms will be ruined. To sterilize, I arrange my milk jugs with hot water, and I also stick my coffee grounds in boiling water for up to 24 hours.

Once your milk jug and coffee grounds are sterilized, you can start filling the milk jug with coffee grounds using a funnel. After filling the whole jug with coffee grounds, add hot water to sterilize the coffee grounds further. Then, let the water percolate all the way down and close the milk jug for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, make a few holes in the milk jug using a nail and widen them using a screwdriver. You can then inoculate the growing medium with some mushroom spawn. Place the milk jug in a dark corner of your garage or greenhouse, and wait for the mushrooms to grow.

The best temperature to grow your mushrooms is 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 12 to 24 degrees Celsius. Mushrooms love humidity, and the milk jug will maintain the humidity inside the coffee grounds.

As time progresses, the mycelium will start to overtake the coffee grounds in the milk jug and will start to feed on the coffee grounds. Out of the holes will come the mushrooms, which are the actual fruiting body of the fungus.

After a few days, the mushrooms will start growing, and they will be absolutely delicious. There's nothing like growing your own food, including your own mushrooms. This is a great way to save money, and you can grow as many mushrooms as you like. So, give it a try and see how it goes!
