Waking Up with Purpose: A Day in the Life of an Organic Farmer
They are always so excited to be out of their coop and running towards their favorite spot - the mat in front of the workshop. That's where all the bugs like to hide, and the chickens go bananas for them.
Feeding the chickens is one of the most pleasurable things I do in a day. I mix their feed with greens and watch as they all follow me. After feeding them, I take some time for myself to watch the sunrise in peace. Mornings are the most peaceful time of the day, and it's the perfect opportunity to reflect on my journey and plan for the day ahead.
I used to have a desk job in IT with no windows, just a computer screen. While I liked what I did and the people I worked with, I craved a connection with nature. One of my passions is photography and videography, and I would go on hikes with my coworkers and friends to capture nature's beauty. However, it wasn't enough, and I longed for a lifestyle that was collective in nature and in balance with the world around me.
After breakfast, I feed the bees and check on my plants and trees. I also fly my drone over the farm to ensure all the drip lines and sprinklers are working correctly. In the afternoon, I pick fruits and vegetables, including our delicious organic strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, and more.
My great grandfather was a farmer who grew everything organically and inspired my love for growing my own produce. I now make my own compost and have earthworms in a worm bin. Our dream is to build an organic farm where people can come and pick their own produce, just like a grocery store, but all organic and straight from the plants.
Water conservation is crucial to me, and I fear running out of fresh water, given how little importance we give to conserving it. I end the day by driving my tractor to spread organic fertilizers and feed my chickens once more. In the evenings, I always make time to watch the sunset and reflect on the future and what kind of world I want to create for myself, my family, and the planet.
As I look back on my journey and the life I have created for myself, I feel grateful for every day that I get to live in harmony with nature. If we all do our little part every day to make this world a better place and strive for understanding with each other and with nature, this world would be a far better place. It's the world we should be proud to live in.
