Growing Your Own Fig Tree

In this blog post, we will cover the five tips to plant and grow fig trees. A lot of time when I learn something new, I love to share it! Let's get started!

Tip #1: Site Selection

When planting fig trees, it's essential to choose the right site. Fig trees can grow very large, up to 25 to 30 feet in height and width. So, it's crucial to select a location where they have plenty of room to grow. Additionally, fig trees need full sun, at least 12 to 14 hours of sun in summer to produce large fruit that you can enjoy. So, choose a site that receives full sun.

Tip #2: Digging the Hole

Dig a hole that's at least three times the size of the container. After digging the hole, add compost and organic fertilizer around the perimeter of the hole. This will provide the roots with essential nutrients that they need to grow.

Tip #3: Watering

Fig trees love water, and they require daily watering, especially during the summer months. Use a drip line to water the tree, and create a little depression around the tree to allow the water to collect. This will help the tree absorb water more efficiently.

Tip #4: Mulching

Mulching is essential to retaining moisture in the soil. Use wood mulch around the base of the fig tree, which will break down over time and provide the soil with nutrients.

Tip #5: Pest Control (Organic)

Pests love figs, so it's crucial to use organic pest control to protect your fig tree. Spray your fig tree, including the fruit, with neem oil and pure castle soap. Additionally, use beauty spray and spinosad spray to target worms.

Conclusion

By following these five tips, you'll be able to plant and grow fig trees successfully. Remember to choose the right site, dig a hole that's three times the size of the container, water daily, use wood mulch, and protect your fig tree from pests. With these tips, you'll be able to enjoy delicious figs for years to come!
