A Money-Saving Gardening Hack: Grow Plants From Cuttings

If you're a gardener or just starting out, you know that plants can be expensive. The good news is, there's a well-known secret that nurseries don't want you to know - you can propagate many plants just from stem cuttings. In this blog, we'll show you how easy it is and how many different kinds of plants you can grow from cuttings.

Step 1: Gather your materials

You'll need gloves (if propagating thorny plants), a sharp pair of shears, and some rooting hormone (optional).

Step 2: Choose your plants

You can propagate a lot of different kinds of plants from cuttings, such as blackberries, raspberries, grapes, blueberries, figs, roses, herbs, and many more.

Step 3: Take the cuttings

Take stem cuttings from the plant you want to propagate. Make sure the stems are healthy and not diseased or damaged. For blackberries, raspberries, and grapes, take hardwood cuttings when the plants are dormant over the winter. For other plants, take cuttings anytime during the year.

Step 4: Prepare the cuttings

Remove any leaves from the stem, leaving a node or two intact. Scratch the stem at the bottom to expose the cambium layer, where the roots will grow.

Step 5: Plant the cuttings

Plant the cuttings in a pot or directly in the ground. Make sure the stem is in contact with the soil, and press the soil around it to make it compact.

Step 6: Water the cuttings

Water the newly planted cuttings and keep the soil moist. Be patient and wait for the roots to develop. Once the new plants are established, you can transplant them to their permanent location.

By propagating plants from cuttings, you can save money and grow more plants for your garden or to share with friends and family. Give it a try and see how easy it is!
