How to Get Rid of Earwigs
Earwigs are attracted to moist, dark areas and feed on a variety of plants and insects. They can be particularly damaging to seedlings and young plants. Earwigs can be a nuisance in gardens and homes, but there are several methods you can use to get rid of them. Here are some ways to eliminate earwigs:
Trap Them: Use rolled-up newspaper or cardboard tubes and place them in areas where earwigs are present. Earwigs will hide in these tubes during the day, and you can dispose of them by shaking them out into a bucket of soapy water.
Use Diatomaceous Earth: Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth in areas where earwigs are present. The sharp edges of the diatomaceous earth particles will cut through the earwigs' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate and die. The cheapest way to buy Diatomaceous Earth is in bulk. Use Iron Phosphate: Iron phosphate is a natural molluscicide and insecticide that is commonly used in gardens to control pests such as slugs, snails, and earwigs. Iron phosphate works by disrupting the pests' feeding habits, causing them to stop feeding and eventually die.
Sluggo carries a product on Amazon called Sluggo Plus which is OMRI listed and contained Iron Phosphate to get rid of earwigs.
Eliminate Hiding Places: Earwigs love to hide in dark, damp places, such as under mulch, rocks, and boards. Remove these hiding places to make the area less hospitable for earwigs.
Set up a Beer Trap: Place a shallow dish or jar filled with beer in the garden or near the entrance of your home. Earwigs will be attracted to the beer, crawl in, and drown.
Use Natural Repellents: Certain herbs and plants, such as mint, basil, and catnip, can repel earwigs. Plant these around your garden or home to deter earwigs from coming near.
Spray with Soap and Oil: Pure Castille soap and neem oil are an effective and safe way to make the areas unpleasant for earwigs. These work best to get rid of soft body inspects such as lady bugs and white flies, they might not kill the earwigs, however, they do repel earwigs. Spray it directly on areas where the earwigs are present. Amazon links to Pure Castille Soap and Neem Oil.
