Increase Harvest 10X with These 3 Simple Tricks
Having a garden is amazing! You get to harvest fresh vegetables and enjoy fresh herbs and fruits of your labor. However, if you could increase the production of your garden 10 folds, wouldn’t that be amazing? Following is the video I have posted on increasing your production 10x and I am also including all the information in this article on how to increase your production 10 times.
Following are three simple tricks to increase your production ten times from the same area even if all other factors are constant such as watering sunlight and fertilizing. These three tips sets apart an amateur gardener from a professional gardener
#1 Pinch Those Flowers
Pinch the flowers and prune the plant (do this only with leafy greens such as basil lettuce spinach mustard etc). Do not pinch of the flowers from plants you actually want to have fruits and vegetables from because the flowers mature into fruit on fruiting plants however when leafy plants produce flower the plant concentrates all of its energy into producing seeds. This means less leaves! If you pinch off the head including the flowers, the plant produces more leaves to produce more flowers and more seed.
So, you can also harvest the leafy greens by pruning the plant to the last set of new leaves. This will make the plant branch off making a plant into much bushier and bigger plant with lots of leaves. Do not pick the top of Kale plants because kale is a single stem plant so if the top of the kale is cut off, it will not produce any more leaves. Harvest kale leaves from the bottom leaving four to five sets of leaves on top. With this trick you can enjoy basil, mint, and other leafy greens and increase your production and grow much bushier plants for much bigger harvest later.
#2 Pick Often
The more you pick the more you get! Isn't that incredible?
To understand this you have to understand the plant psychology and plant life cycle. All plants want to create seeds for future generation. If we interrupt the plant from making seed, it will produce a lot more flowers and a lot more fruit in order to produce more seeds. If you regularly pick tomatoes eggplants and peppers the plant will think it's not been able to produce seed and it will set the plant into panic mode and the plant will produce a lot more flowers and lot more fruits and vegetables so that it can create seed for the future generation.
Do not let the vegetables ripen on the planet unless it's the end of the life cycle of the plant or at the end of the season. If you want to harvest the seeds from the plant for planting next season pick the vegetables when they're small and raw before they get too big and ripe and you will get a lot more vegetables.
#3 Plant in Succession
Plants have a life cycle like any other living organism. We can't have plants producing vegetables continuously, so in order to have more harvest, plant in succession! Harvest or take out the plants that are not producing anymore or are at the end of their life cycle and start more seedlings and plant those in its place.
I've done that with radishes. Radishes are ready to harvest in just 4 weeks, just in one month, so I plant seeds every single week and by fourth week I harvested the radishes that are already matured and then I plant more seeds in its place. Most annual vegetable plants have a lifecycle of anywhere from 2 or 6 months. Even fruit trees have a life cycle anywhere from twelve to hundred years. While apricots produce fruit up until 20 years old, oranges continue to produce fruit until 50 to 60 years. This is why most commercial orchards replant the trees at the end of the lifecycle and plant new orchard. This is the same principle that applies to a vegetable plants. Start your plants early in the season and when the danger of frost is over plant the seedlings in your garden.
However this should not be the only round of planting seedlings. As the plants age start new seedlings and plant new seedlings in your garden for succession planting. While you can only plant once in summer in certain areas such as Canada and northern states depending on where you live and your zone, you could have three rounds of succession planting especially in areas like California Florida and Texas. In Hawaii you can practice succession planting all year long so plant in succession in your garden more often to have a bountiful harvest from the same area all season long. This is the difference between an amateur and a professional gardener. A professional gardener takes advantage of time and the life cycle of plants to have a bigger harvest.
If you play all of these tricks all of these techniques, you can increase your harvests 10 times! As always feed your plants with nutrient-dense fertilizers such as compost, worm castings, and organic fertilizers and see your garden produce 10 folds!!!
